As Gujarat’s heatwave slowly subsides and the wait for the monsoon rains begin, the transition between the two is likely to bring dust storms with gusty winds in the state, predicted the Met Centre Ahmedabad of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

From today onwards, the Met department predicts light dust storms with maximum wind speeds less than 40 kmph for the next three days in the Kutch and Saurashtra regions, namely in Banaskantha, Patan, Surendranagar, and Kutch.

However, apart from these regions, the conditions are predicted to be dry for the next five days.

For Ahmedabad and neighbouring regions, the Met department has predicted partly cloudy sky, with maximum temperatures touching 43°C today. Moving forward, the IMD predicts Ahmedabad weather to be dry for the next five days.

On May 23, mercury in Ahmedabad had risen to 46.7°C, making it the hottest day for the city in the last eight years.

Monsoon from June to September

As for the monsoon, IMD has forecasted above-average monsoon rains in India this year in its ‘updated long range forecast outlook’, confirming its April forecast of a good monsoon.

“Quantitatively, the southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall over the country as a whole is likely to be 106% of the long period average (LPA) with a model error of 4%. Thus above normal rainfall is most likely over the country as a whole during the monsoon season from June to September 2024,” IMD has said.
