The SG-1 Traffic Police in Ahmedabad have arrested the driver of a dumper truck involved in the fatal accident on the Gota overbridge that claimed the lives of two motorcyclists, officials said on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Vimal Bhimsing Dodiyar (26), a resident of Bharwadvas in Bol village of Sanand taluka, was taken into custody following the crash on April 15 on the descending stretch of the Gota bridge towards Vaishnodevi Circle.

According to police, preliminary investigation revealed that Dodiyar did not possess a valid driving licence at the time of the incident. “Despite not being authorised or trained to drive a heavy vehicle, the accused was operating the dumper, thereby endangering human life,” an officer said.

The dumper, bearing registration number GJ-24 X 5130, allegedly rammed into a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of rider Narpatbhai Danfi and pillion rider Sushilkumar Prasad. Both victims died on the spot due to the impact.

Police have also booked the owner of the dumper, identified as Keyur Barot, for allegedly allowing an unlicensed individual to operate the heavy vehicle. His address is yet to be ascertained.

An FIR has been registered under relevant provisions of the BNS including Sections , along with Sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Officials said the accident took place around 3.15 pm on a public road descending from the Gota bridge on the SG Highway stretch. The case is being investigated by the SG-1 Traffic Police, who are also examining the sequence of events leading to the crash.

Authorities reiterated the need for strict enforcement against unlicensed drivers, particularly those operating heavy vehicles, citing the serious risk posed to public safety.
