Dumper driver arrested after dangerous high-speed escape on SG Highway

A dramatic chase unfolded on Ahmedabad's SG Highway after a dumper driver allegedly drove on the wrong side of the road, rammed a car and attempted to flee, putting the lives of several commuters at risk.
According to Ahmedabad Traffic Police, a case has been registered at the SG-1 Highway Traffic Police Station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section of the Motor Vehicles Act. Police said the accused driver has been arrested and legal proceedings have been initiated.
Officials said the dumper was being driven recklessly along the SG Highway, including stretches where the movement of heavy vehicles is restricted during specified hours. During the incident, the driver allegedly collided with a car and then attempted to escape the scene.
In a bid to flee, the driver reportedly crossed over road dividers on two occasions, causing damage to public infrastructure and further endangering road users. Witnesses alleged that the vehicle continued to be driven at high speed despite the presence of heavy traffic.
Traffic police personnel attempted to intercept the dumper, but the driver allegedly accelerated and fled after spotting the police team. The pursuit continued along the SG Highway before authorities were able to identify and apprehend the accused.
Police have arrested a 26-year-old dumper driver from Rajasthan. The accused, identified as Velaram Rama Kalasua, a native of Dungarpur district in Rajasthan currently residing in the Gandhinagar-Daskroi area, was driving the dumper in a rash and negligent manner near the Jagatpur crossroads at around 4.30 pm on June 3.
A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism and raising concerns over the movement of heavy vehicles during restricted hours in and around Ahmedabad.
Police officials said the footage is being examined as part of the investigation. Authorities are also looking into whether the dumper was operating in violation of traffic restrictions applicable to heavy vehicles on the SG Highway corridor.
The SG Highway One Traffic Police have registered an FIR and launched a detailed investigation into the incident. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the probe, officials said.
