Drunk driving suspected as car rams bike on Shilaj Bridge in Ahmedabad

The M Division Traffic Police have initiated legal proceedings in connection with a late-night crash on the Shilaj–Racharda Road in Ahmedabad. A Kia car allegedly driven under the influence of alcohol rammed into a motorcycle on the Shilaj Bridge, injuring two riders.
According to the traffic police, the incident occurred around 8.45 pm on January 18 when complainant Sobhendra Umesh Dubey (29) and his friend Hemand Barot were riding a Pulsar motorcycle towards Vaishnodevi Circle. As they were ascending the Shilaj Bridge from the Montecristo side, a Kia car allegedly hit the motorcycle from behind at high speed, throwing both riders onto the road and causing multiple injuries.
Police have identified the car driver as Nisir Shah. The FIR explicitly mentions that the driver was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the accident. Dubey sustained injuries to his legs, knees, forehead, left hand, palm, thumb and back, and was later treated at Sola Civil Hospital. The complainant has estimated damage to the motorcycle of around ₹25,000.
Locals have alleged that the incident on the Shilaj Bridge was part of a larger sequence of reckless driving. According to eyewitness accounts, the Kia car allegedly rammed into as many as nine vehicles while speeding from the Taj Hotel area towards Shilaj–Rancharda Road. Residents and motorists claimed the car was being driven at breakneck speed, triggering panic along the stretch.
Locals alleged that the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol during the spree. Several motorists reportedly chased the vehicle and managed to intercept it on Rancharda Road, following which the driver was handed over to the police.
The multiple collisions led to anger among road users, police said, adding that prompt intervention by motorists prevented further damage or casualties.
An officer from the M Division Traffic Police said a case has been registered and a detailed investigation is under way. “We are examining CCTV footage, social media videos and witness statements to establish the sequence of events and the extent of damage caused,” the officer said.
Police said further legal action will be taken based on medical reports, forensic findings and other evidence collected during the probe.
