During the ongoing Gujarat Assembly session, concerns were raised about the increasing drug trafficking in the state. In response, the government presented data revealing that drugs worth ₹485 crore were seized from Gujarat's coastal areas over the past two years.
From January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, authorities seized 60 kg and 304 grams of methamphetamine, valued at ₹422.12 crore.
Between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024, a total of 173 kg of charas was confiscated, with an estimated worth of ₹60.55 crore. Additionally, 460 grams of heroin was seized, valued at ₹2.30 crore.
The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has been actively cracking down on drug smuggling, and over the last two years, a total of ₹485 crore worth of drugs have been seized. In connection with these operations, six foreign nationals have been arrested.
The number of drug seizures in Gujarat has increased in recent times but action against the offenders still seems to be lenient.
Over the last three years, 1,743 cases of drug trafficking have been registered in Gujarat, but only 16 offenders have been convicted, as admitted by the state.
