Drug menace: 54 smugglers arrested every month in Gujarat
In the last three years, 1,366 drug smuggling cases have been registered in Gujarat, leading to 1,946 arrests. This translates to an average of 54 individuals being arrested every month against 38 cases.
According to details released by the Narcotics Control Bureau, in 2024, a total of 495 cases were registered, in which 383 cases were registered against those caught with cannabis and opium, while 112 cases were filed related to methamphetamine. Additionally, 702 people were arrested in these cases.
Among the states with the highest number of drug-related arrests, Kerala ranks first with 27,777 arrests. Other states with high arrest numbers in a single year include Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Odisha, and West Bengal.
Compared to 2022, drug smuggling cases in Gujarat increased by 25% in 2024, while the number of arrests saw a 10% rise. In 2022, 394 drug smuggling cases were registered, leading to 637 arrests.
