DRI seizes Diamond worth ₹3 cr from Ahmedabad airport
After frequent cases of gold smuggling at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport, Ahmedabad, the DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) officials have now seized diamonds worth ₹3 crore from three passengers arriving at the airport.
All three passengers have been arrested by the DRI officials. During the initial investigation, the passengers revealed that they were working as carriers (couriers) for some jewellers from Ahmedabad and Surat.
The DRI officials have started an investigation into the matter and many big names of jewelers from Ahmedabad and Surat are suspected to be involved in the diamond smuggling racket. However, as the investigation is still ongoing, no further details have been disclosed by the authorities.
According to DRI sources, the seized diamonds are estimated to be worth ₹3 crore, but the officials suspect that these carriers might have smuggled diamonds several times in the past.
The Customs staff at Ahmedabad airport are on the alert due to the increasing smuggling attempts.
