A total of 680 dolphins were documented in the marine area across the 4,087 sq km area off Gujarat’s coastline, recognised a hub for dolphins.

The highest number of 498 dolphins was located in the waters between Okha and Navlakhi, an area within the Marine National Park and Marine Sanctuary.

The southern part of the Gulf of Kutch, spanning 1,384 square kilometers from Okha to Navlakhi, was identified as the primary dolphin habitat, with 498 individuals recorded. In contrast, the northern Gulf of Kutch, covering 1,821 square kilometers, accounted for 168 dolphins. Smaller groups were found in Bhavnagar (10 dolphins across 494 square kilometers) and Morbi (4 dolphins in 388 square kilometers).

Fishermen working in the sea from Kutch to Bhavnagar play a crucial role in saving these dolphins.

This survey was conducted over two days through a collaborative effort involving the Forest Department and various organisations, with a total of 47 specialists in each team, including technical scientists, observers, photographers, and field assistants. The survey utilised modern technology such as GPS units facilitated by various boats.

The Indian Ocean humpback dolphin can be found in the waters along Gujarat’s coastline and is identifiable by its snout and dorsal fin. Dolphins are known for their friendly and inquisitive nature, often seen leaping and playing in the waves, delighting tourists with their acrobatic displays.
