Dhandhuka violence: SIT formed, over 125 booked for rioting amid heavy police deployment

Tension gripped Dhandhuka town after the brutal killing of a 30-year-old man over a minor dispute, triggering widespread violence and arson. Police have now launched a crackdown, booking around 125 people for rioting and detaining at least 25 accused for vandalism and violence.
The incident began with a dispute over a bike overtaking between Dharmesh Gamara and a man identified as Sameer. The altercation escalated, and during the clash, another accused, Rizwan, allegedly attacked Gamara with a knife, leading to his death. The killing sparked outrage, with mobs taking to the streets and indulging in large-scale vandalism, targeting shops, vehicles, hotels, and other properties.
Following the unrest, heavy police deployment has been made across the town. Senior officials, including SP Om Prakash Jat, led a large force, with nearly 200 personnel conducting overnight combing operations in sensitive areas. Police carried out house-to-house checks, questioned suspects with criminal backgrounds, and seized sharp weapons during the operation. Strict checking has also been enforced at entry and exit points of the town, while cyber teams are monitoring social media to curb rumours.
Police have registered murder cases against Sameer and Rizwan, while a separate rioting case has been filed against the mob, with PSI Harshrajsinh Zala as the complainant.
Considering the sensitivity of the case and demands from the victim’s family, authorities have announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a thorough and impartial probe. Officials also said a special public prosecutor will be appointed to strengthen the case.
SP Om Prakash Jat, who visited the bereaved family, assured that strict action will be taken against all accused. He also said that a coordinated drive will be launched to identify and remove illegal encroachments in the town as part of action against anti-social elements.
The victim’s last rites were conducted under tight security late at night, with a large number of people in attendance. Family members and community leaders expressed anger, alleging that anti-social elements are targeting their community, and demanded exemplary punishment for the accused.
The situation in Dhandhuka remains tense but under control, with heavy security in place.
