A youth was killed in Dhandhuka, a town in the Ahmedabad district, on Saturday, triggering clashes between members of two communities and incidents of arson, prompting heavy police deployment to bring the situation under control.

The deceased, Dharmesh Gamara, was stabbed to death. His body has been shifted to a local hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The main accused, Rizwan, has been arrested.

As per preliminary investigation, the incident was triggered by a minor dispute between two youths, reportedly over a minor issue such as overtaking a vehicle, which later escalated.

Following the incident, angry groups took to the streets and protests turned violent in parts of the town. Incidents of arson were reported near Paliyad Road and the main circle, where some vehicles and shops were set on fire, officials said.

The unrest led to closure of local markets, with residents largely remaining indoors amid an atmosphere of fear.

A large contingent of police, including senior officers from the Ahmedabad District Police, was deployed in the area. Teams led by the Superintendent of Police and other officials rushed to the spot, and security has been tightened in sensitive locations.

Police said additional suspects have been detained and continuous patrolling is being carried out to maintain order.

Fire brigade teams from nearby towns were pressed into service to douse the flames caused by the incidents of arson, officials added.

Local MLA Kalubhai Dabhi and district authorities appealed to residents to maintain calm and not to spread or act on rumours.
