In a significant move, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) carried out a massive demolition operation in the Akbarnagar area of Bapunagar on Thursday morning, flattening over 450 illegal huts and small mud-brick houses within two hours.

The operation, conducted near Ajit Mill Crossroads, was executed with the help of five JCBs and more than eight Hitachi machines. The AMC’s Estate Department, supported by a heavy police presence, undertook the demolition work amid tight security. A total of two Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP), nine Police Inspectors (PI), 26 Police Sub-Inspectors (PSI), 400 constables, and ten SRP sections were deployed to ensure a peaceful operation.

The AMC had earlier served notices to all residents, instructing them to vacate the encroached structures. Although 221 people had been allocated alternative housing in Vatva in 2014, 76 residents continued to live in the Akbarnagar settlement. On Thursday, many residents removed their belongings and sat with their possessions on the roadside.

According to H Division ACP R D Oza, the demolition was carried out peacefully, with no major incidents reported. After the removal of debris, the AMC plans to construct a boundary wall to prevent further encroachments.

The demolition drive continued through the day as the AMC teams worked to clear the area and secure the land for future use.
