Deesa factory blast: Victims move Supreme Court seeking compensation of ₹2 cr

The families of the Deesa firecracker factory blast have now approached Supreme Court seeking justice.
The families have filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) demanding a compensation of ₹2 crore for each deceased. The petition follows the April 1 incident, where a massive fire broke out in an illegal firecracker factory in Deesa, resulting in the death of 22 workers who were inside the premises at the time of the explosion.
Following the incident, the Gujarat government formed a five-member police team to investigate the blast. However, nearly three months later, no updates on the investigation have been made public.
One of the petitioners, Chandrasinh Nayak, who lost six members of his family in the explosion, has moved the Supreme Court, demanding accountability and urgent action.
During the hearing, the victims’ lawyers argued that despite the severity of the tragedy, no meaningful investigation has been conducted so far. They stated that the families have lost faith in the local police, and therefore, an external investigation team from outside the state should be brought in to ensure transparency and justice.
The petition also requested the court to direct authorities to compensate injured victims with ₹50 lakh each and deceased victim families ₹2 crore and urged the Supreme Court to issue safety guidelines for firecrackers and other hazardous factories across the state to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
In response, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Gujarat government, Home Minister, District Collector, and the Chief Secretary, demanding explanations and status reports on the matter.
