Ahmedabad is experiencing a surge in crime incidents, especially in its posh secluded residential areas. One such case emerges from the city’s Bopal area, where an elderly couple was looted of lakhs by robbers on a busy day.
Robbery in broad daylight
An elderly couple, Pushpa and Manu Patel, were looted by three robbers of cash and valuables worth ₹1.11 lakh at knifepoint on Nov 6.
A robber, disguised as a courier boy, showed up at the couple’s house in Himavan Apartments in the Bopal area under the pretence of delivering a parcel at around 2-2.30 p.m.
To keep them occupied, he asked Pushpa for her signature and proceeded to ask the same of Manu.
Meanwhile, his two other accomplices barged into the house and locked the door from inside. Two of the robbers threatened the couple at knifepoint and demanded that they surrender all the valuables in the house.
Another robber took the cupboard keys from Pushpa and looted cash and belongings worth approximately ₹1.11 lakh, including two gold chains, three gold rings, an anklet, 15 silver coins, two idols of Goddess Lakshmi, and ₹10,000 in cash, and escaped the scene, as per the complaint filed.
As the robbers fled, they were chased by two shopkeepers in the vicinity who heard Pushpa yelling.
However, the three got away in a blue Swift car, without a licence plate, parked outside the apartment. There was already a driver waiting inside.
Bopal police has registered a case of robbery, attempt to cause death or grievous hurt, trespassing, criminal intimidation, and abetment against the four involved in this heist, as per reports. The police have initiated a probe into this by inspecting the CCTV footage.
