Customer alleges dead fly in garlic bread at Sindhu Bhavan cafe, files complaint with AMC

A customer has alleged a serious lapse in food hygiene at an upscale café on Sindhu Bhavan Road after he reportedly found a dead fly in a dish served to him, prompting a complaint to the civic authorities.

The incident took place at Komo by Kaffa, a popular high-end dining destination in Ahmedabad, where Dhruvil Patel had gone for a meal with his wife.

According to Patel, a resident of Shahibaug, the couple had ordered pasta with garlic bread, rice with curry and iced coffee. “The iced coffee and pasta were served first. Shortly after we began eating, I noticed something unusual and immediately got up from the table,” he said.

Upon inspection, Patel alleged that a dead fly was found in the garlic bread served alongside the pasta. He raised the issue with the café staff, leading to a brief commotion at the premises.

“The staff apologised for the lapse. They waived off the bill and offered a complimentary pastry,” Patel said, adding that he was dissatisfied with the handling of the matter and later approached the food department of Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

Patel claimed that the pasta dish was priced at ₹850 and questioned the standards maintained by premium establishments. “If such expensive cafés cannot ensure basic hygiene, they should not be operating. There must be strict action proportionate to the prices they charge,” he said.

Officials from the AMC said they have received the complaint and will look into the matter in accordance with food safety regulations.

The incident has raised concerns about food safety standards at high-end eateries, with calls for stricter inspections and enforcement by authorities.
