Like a plot straight out of a thriller movie, a criminal altered his identity and started a new life under the sun believing that police will never get him.

It was after 25 years on Jan 19 when the Ahmedabad crime branch arrested Motilal Jadav, an absconding accused in a theft and firing case that took place in Navsari in 1999.

Police inspector PK Gohil and the team of the Ahmedabad crime branch were informed about the 25-year-old case of Motilal Jadav.  For eight months, K S Sisodia, inspector, crime branch, and his team were carrying out operations to nab Jadav.

The search at his hometown in Maharashtra also didn’t fetch any leads, as the accused’s family had lost contact with him for years.

Accused found in MP

With the help of technical surveillance and sources or informants, it was ascertained that Jadav is in Madhya Pradhesh’s Khandwa, where he lived in Harsud taluka’s Chhanera town with his wife and two children.

The police faced challenges in identifying Jadav due to significant changes in his appearance over a long period of time.

An investigation was started in Chhanera, leading to the revelation of his hidden identity.

It was revealed that by forging his documents, he established himself as Dr Ajay Patel and was praised amongst the villagers. He started a new family in Chhanera after marriage and has two children.

The accused, now 48 years old, had evaded arrest since the age of 22 when he escaped from police custody.

Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (crime), Ahmedabad, Chaitanya Mandlik, said, “The accused kept travelling to different places after escaping, and he was living in Khandwa for 20 years. To stay away from the police’s watch, he changed his name with forged documents and entirely broke contact with his family.”

After an investigation and search for eight months, the Ahmedabad crime branch team nabbed Jadav. A case was registered against him for forging documents.
