A woman police constable posted with the Ahmedabad City Police has filed a formal complaint against a resident of her society, alleging that she was being harassed and extorted despite having repaid a personal loan in full along with interest.

According to the FIR lodged at Sabarmati Police Station, the complainant, 30-year-old Sangeeta Baria, a serving constable since 2012, alleged that she borrowed ₹1.98 lakh in instalments from Sahil Patel, a neighbour in her Chenpur society, New Ranip to help her younger brother start a pan parlour business in 2023.

Baria stated that between December 2023 and February 2024, Patel transferred small amounts ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹99,500 to her SBI bank account via Google Pay. In return, she had issued two signed blank cheques to Patel as security for the borrowed amount.

Despite agreeing to repay the loan within two months, Baria found herself unable to meet the deadline. Patel allegedly then began demanding monthly interest at 5% and repeatedly pressured her for repayments. Between February 2024 and April 2025, Baria claims to have transferred a total of ₹2.93 lakh – ₹95,000 more than the original amount borrowed – through multiple transactions.

However, the complaint alleges that Patel continued to harass her despite full repayment. In May 2025, he reportedly visited her home, demanded additional money, and refused to return the two blank cheques. When confronted, he allegedly threatened her.

The situation escalated in June 2025, when Patel reportedly filled in one of the blank cheques for ₹13.20 lakh, dated 9 June, and attempted to deposit it at the bank. The cheque bounced due to insufficient funds. Baria alleged that despite having cleared the dues, Patel continued to intimidate her and made unlawful demands for further payments.

Feeling cornered, she approached the Sabarmati Police Station, seeking legal action against Patel.

A senior police officer from Sabarmati PS confirmed that a complaint under sections related to criminal intimidation, breach of trust, and attempted extortion has been registered, and a probe is underway.

“The matter involves a financial dispute with allegations of cheque misuse and harassment. We are verifying all bank transactions and communications between both parties,” the officer said.

Further investigation is ongoing.
