Consent of parents mandatory for love marriage? Gujarat govt planning new rules

The Gujarat government is preparing to amend the rules related to the registration of love marriages. An official announcement is expected after the proposed changes receive cabinet approval today.
According to sources, new rules related to marriage registration may be presented in the state cabinet meeting. Once the cabinet grants its approval, the Gujarat government will formally announce the revised regulations.
As per preliminary information, the registration of marriages solemnised by eloping may no longer be allowed without the consent of parents. This means parental approval could be made mandatory for the registration of love marriages in the state.
Sources indicate that the government may introduce specific provisions aimed at ensuring parental involvement in love marriages. Under the proposed rules, a mandatory notice will be sent to the parents of couples who have married by eloping before the marriage is registered. Parents will be required to respond to this notice within 30 days.
Additionally, marriage registration will be permitted only at the office corresponding to the address mentioned on the woman’s Aadhaar card. These changes are expected to significantly alter the existing marriage registration process in Gujarat.
A crucial meeting involving the Law minister, legal experts, and concerned officials took place on Tuesday evening. The final draft of the proposed rules on love marriage registration wad likely prepared at the meeting. This draft is likely to be placed before the cabinet on Wednesday for approval.
If implemented, these amendments could have a major impact on love marriages and the legal registration process across the state.
