Gujarat Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani on Friday announced a protest outside the Superintendent of Police (SP) office in Vav-Tharad on April 29 over the alleged rise in drug trafficking in the area while accusing the police of failing to curb the menace.

Addressing a public meeting in Shivnagar, Mevani alleged that narcotic substances were being sold openly in the region and questioned the role of law enforcement agencies.

“Liquor, charas, ganja and drugs are being sold openly in this area. Does the police administration want to see the youth of Shivnagar and Tharad being ruined? Why is the administration turning a blind eye?” he said.

The Vadgam MLA outlined a plan to intensify the agitation, stating that residents would gather in large numbers at the SP office on April 29.

“On April 29 at 11 am, people from Shivnagar will reach the SP office. This time, five women from the area will lead the protest and directly question the police about the situation,” he said.

Mevani described drug abuse and illegal liquor trade as a serious threat to the future of local youth and urged residents to prepare for the protest.

He said the demonstration was aimed at sending a strong message to both alleged drug traffickers and the administration over what he termed as failure to curb the menace.

Police officials were not immediately available for comment.
