College student alleges sexual assault on pretext of marriage by 23-year-old man

The Vastrapur police have booked a 23-year-old man for allegedly engaging in repeated sexual relations with a young woman under the false promise of marriage. The accused, Adib Mehmood Vohra, a resident of Johra Residency near Raj Hospital in Jamalpur, has been charged following a complaint filed by the 20-year-old girl, a student at GLS University.

According to the FIR lodged at Vastrapur police station on May 18, the complainant said she first met Vohra on her birthday in April 2023 at a café on CG Road. The two developed a close friendship that gradually turned into a romantic relationship.

About a year and a half ago, Vohra allegedly expressed his intention to marry her and assured her that they would begin a new life together after marriage.

The complainant claimed that on the pretext of marriage, Vohra took her to a hotel in Bodakdev—Shaligram Hotel—around March 2024, where he allegedly physically indulged with her for the first time. The relationship continued over several months, with multiple encounters at the same hotel, the last of which occurred on December 24, 2024.

However, when the complainant began insisting on marriage, Vohra allegedly began evading her and eventually refused to marry her altogether. He subsequently cut off all communication with her. The woman further alleged that after sharing the ordeal with her family, she realised she had been misled and decided to approach the police.

Vastrapur police have registered a case under relevant sections and have started to investigate the matter.
