Samples of suspected cobra venom seized from Surat’s Sarthana area have been sent to a forensic laboratory in Ahmedabad for analysis, as the Forest Department stepped up its investigation into the illegal sale of snake venom.

The department has begun questioning seven accused after securing their two-day remand. The case was transferred to the Forest Department following the arrest of the suspects by the Surat Special Operations Group (SOG).

Officials said a team has been dispatched to Ahmedabad after it was discovered that the prime accused, identified as Ghanshyam Soni, is based in the city.

Investigators believe that his interrogation could help uncover a wider network involved in the illegal trade of snake venom.

The seized venom has been sent to the Ahmedabad forensic laboratory to determine its origin. According to officials, the examination report is expected within two to three days and will establish the species of snake from which the venom was extracted.
