Cloudburst in Junagadh: Mendarda receives 10 inches of rain in 4 hours

Amid a red alert in parts of Gujarat, incessant rainfall caused a flood-like situation in Junagadh’s Mendarda after 10 inches of rainfall in just four hours.
Due to heavy rains, schools in the district were closed for the day. Along with Mendarda, Vanthli received 5.31 inches, Keshod 4.8 inches, Mangrol 2.56 inches, Maliya Hatina 2.56 inches, Junagadh 1.97 inches, Junagadh city 1.97 inches, Manavadar 1.02 inches, and Manavadar received 0.5 inches of rain.
“Between 6 am and 10 am today, 250 mm of rainfall was recorded, causing overtopping on five causeways of the Madhuvanti river and leading to road closures, while the Datrana–Bagdu road was also shut due to water flow, with police present at the site,” informed the Anil Ranavasiya, Collector of Junagadh.
Water has overtopped five causeways, leading to road closures. Low-lying areas of Mithapur and Datrana villages have also been flooded.
Rainfall tally in other regions
Between 6 am and 10 am today, heavy rainfall was also recorded in several parts of Saurashtra– Mahuva in Bhavnagar received 4.76 inches, Talala in Gir Somnath 4.06 inches, Rajula in Amreli 3.35 inches, Sutrapada in Gir Somnath 2.8 inches, Gir Gadhada 2.64 inches, and Porbandar 2.52 inches. In 16 talukas, average rainfall ranged from 1 to 2 inches.
Reservoir inflows increase, dam gates opened
With water inflow rising in the Sabli reservoir near Khorasa village in Vanthli taluka, 11 gates of the dam have been opened by 1.50 meters. Villages in Vanthli taluka (Khorasa, Sendarda) and Keshod taluka (Magharwada, Manekwada, Derwan) have been placed on alert.
Similarly, at the Ozat Weir Shapur reservoir near Shapur village in Vanthli taluka, water inflows have caused an overflow of 1.70 meters. At the Ozat-2 reservoir near Badalpur village in Junagadh taluka, 3 gates have been opened by 0.60 meters due to rising inflows.

Control room activated
As a precaution, 35–40 people have been shifted to safer locations by the district administration, which has also set up a control room in Junagadh. Based on the weather department’s forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall at scattered places in Junagadh district, citizens have been urged to take necessary precautions, avoid traveling on flooded causeways/roads, and not venture into riverbeds.
The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall across Gujarat for the next five days, owing to the activation of five rain-bearing systems simultaneously. From 10 am to 1 pm on Wednesday, a red alert has been declared in 13 districts and an orange alert in 6 districts.
Red alert: Morbi, Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Dadra Nagar Haveli, and Daman have been placed under red alert, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected along with thunderstorms.
Orange alert: Rajkot, Surendranagar, Botad, Bharuch, Tapi, and Dang have been put under orange alert. Heavy rainfall is likely in these districts, and people have been advised to remain vigilant.
Yellow alert: Kutch, Banaskantha, Patan, Ahmedabad, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Kheda, Anand, Bharuch, Vadodara, Panchmahal, Dahod, Chhota Udepur, and Narmada—are under yellow alert, with chances of light to moderate rainfall.
