A class 10 student was assaulted by a group of youths outside a private school in Ahmedabad’s Ghatlodia area on Monday, prompting the local police to initiate an investigation into what they described as an incident stemming from a prior dispute.
The incident occurred outside National School, where a group of youths allegedly gathered near the school gate and attacked a student shortly after school hours. Ghatlodia police said they received information about a scuffle involving students near the school and immediately rushed to the spot.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that an argument had broken out earlier between students, which later escalated into violence outside the school premises. Police said around eight to ten persons were allegedly involved in the attack, including students of the same school and a relative of one of the accused.
“The altercation initially began as a minor verbal exchange during routine interaction. However, later, several youths assembled outside the school and assaulted the student,” said Jayesh Brahmbhatt, Assistant Commissioner of Police, A Division.
The injured student sustained a head injury, while two others reportedly suffered injuries to the finger and fist. The victim alleged that the attackers used objects such as pipes and wooden sticks, and police are also examining claims that a sharp weapon may have been involved.
Police said the injured student has been called to the police station to record a formal complaint, based on which an FIR will be registered. “Once the complaint is lodged, strict action will be taken within the framework of law,” an officer said.
The process of rounding up the suspected attackers has begun, police said, adding that further investigation is under way to ascertain whether the assault was premeditated.
The incident comes close on the heels of another recent episode of violence involving students in the city, raising concerns over safety outside educational institutions.
