A chartered accountant (CA) residing in Vadodara’s Vasna-Bhayli area is accused of scamming her 70-year-old father and five other kin involved, to the tune of ₹2.39 cr.
Kalyani Khangiwale, the accused under the pretence of being associated with a project with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) , scammed Himanshu Sangmanerkar, her father.
The bogus hospital project
Kalyani, with her husband Rutvij Khangiwale, introduced her father, Himanshu, with their associates, Dr Nishant Shah, a surgeon, and his wife Ami, in 2018.
Kalyani allegedly pretended to have been appointed as an auditor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). She also presented an appointment letter to her father to solidify her claim.
In 2020, Kalyani herself brought the doctor and his wife to her father due to rifts with her now-estranged husband.
In this meeting, the couple mentioned that Kalyani has been associated with them as a director of an IMA project, which will see the construction of a multispeciality hospital near Vadodara.
They lured Himanshu into this deal by stating that the central and state governments, along with reputed doctors, were to be involved in this project.
They proposed that as directors, the couple, alongside Kalyani, would have to invest a sum of money, for which they require monetary assistance.
They offered to return the money to Himanshu in a year.
Family members arranged nearly ₹2.4 crores
Following this, Himanshu, his wife Mira, brother Kishor, son Rushikesh, daughter-in-law Vaishnavi, and son’s brother-in-law Prashant arranged the required sum of ₹2,39,51,775 from their savings and by taking loans from banks and handed it over to Kalyani.
After over a year, upon asking for the money back, the accused trio avoided the pleas. Kalyani even told her family to forget the money and not expect her to return it.
Perpetrators under police scanner
As per the complaint registered in Raopura police station, in December 2022, Kalyani returned to her home and said that she had resigned as the project’s director, because of which she wouldn’t get any money and so wouldn’t be able to pay back her family.
She even threatened her family, saying that anyway, the loans are registered in their names, so she won’t pay any of them, no matter what.
The complaint mentions that her brother Rushikesh urged her for help as they were unable to pay off the loan amount through his salary, and it also made sustaining his daughters’ education difficult.
Kalyani left her house after this and disassociated herself from the family and the loans they took, as per the complaint.
A while later, she presented copies of her bank statement, indicating that the money deposited by her for the hospital’s construction went into Ami’s account.
Police have initiated a probe into this matter and revealed that there is no such project from the IMA. Kalyani’s appointment as AIIMS auditor is also being investigated, while a notice has been sent to the three accused.
Preliminary investigation also revealed that Ami worked as a teacher.
