Chandkheda sisters’ deaths: Father discharged, taken to ACP office for questioning

In a significant development in the mysterious deaths of two minor girls in Chandkheda, the children’s father, Vimal, was discharged from the hospital on Friday afternoon and immediately taken to the ACP L Division office in Sabarmati for further questioning by the police. Meanwhile, the mother, Bhavanaben, continues to be in hospital for medical observation, officials said.
The latest development comes as investigators intensify their probe into the deaths, which have triggered widespread concern across Ahmedabad. Police said the questioning of the father is aimed at piecing together the sequence of events leading up to the incident, even as multiple lines of inquiry remain open.
According to officials, the case has taken a complex turn with emerging evidence suggesting possible poisoning. Forensic analysis of blood samples collected from the parents and the children has reportedly revealed the presence of aluminium phosphide, a highly toxic pesticide. However, the exact cause of death of the children will only be confirmed after the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report is received.
Investigators have also uncovered that Vimal had allegedly purchased a pesticide from a local fertiliser shop in March this year. The purchase is being examined closely to determine whether the substance is linked to the deaths.
Adding another dimension to the probe, police said a diary recovered from Bhavanaben contains references indicating that the family had a strong desire for a male child. Officers are analysing the contents to assess whether this aspect may have had any bearing on the incident.
Police have so far recorded statements of at least 25 people in connection with the case, including family members, residents, the owner of the dairy from where the dosa batter was reportedly sourced, and customers who had also purchased it. These statements are being cross-verified to establish a clearer timeline and rule out or confirm possibilities.
Sources in the police further revealed that there were recurring disputes between Vimal and Bhavanaben over financial matters as well as certain personal habits, which may have contributed to tensions within the household.
The case first came to light after the two young sisters fell ill under suspicious circumstances, initially suspected to be linked to food poisoning after consuming dosa batter. However, as the investigation progressed, inconsistencies in the initial narrative prompted police to explore other angles, including deliberate poisoning.
Speaking on the investigation, Police Inspector Jayesh Makwana said, “We have recorded statements of 25 persons so far. The father has been questioned further after being discharged from the hospital. The FSL report will be crucial in determining the exact cause of death. All possible angles are under examination.”
With the mother still under medical supervision and the father now being questioned in detail, police said the coming days will be critical in establishing the truth behind the deaths. Authorities have assured that a thorough and impartial investigation is being carried out to bring clarity to the case that has deeply disturbed residents of Chandkheda.
