The investigation into the deaths of two minor sisters in Chandkheda has raised fresh questions over whether the police are grappling with the moot question of how did the sisters die or yet to disclose crucial findings, as the probe continues to hinge on pending forensic reports.

Meanwhile, the children’s mother, Bhavanaben, was discharged from hospital on Monday and immediately taken to the Chandkheda Police Station for questioning. Senior officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), questioned her for over an hour before allowing her to leave.

According to police sources, Bhavanaben reiterated the same account that has been consistently narrated by other family members — that the children fell ill after consuming food prepared from dosa batter. Investigators admitted that the near-identical nature of statements recorded so far has added a layer of complexity to the case.

“The statements are largely similar, which is making it difficult to establish the precise sequence of events,” a senior officer said.

The case had earlier taken a serious turn after preliminary findings from the Forensic Science Laboratory indicated the presence of a toxic substance, suggesting possible poisoning. However, officials said that several detailed forensic and chemical analyses are still under way, and the final report is awaited.

Police maintained that the investigation is heavily dependent on these reports. “Multiple scientific examinations are pending. Only after we receive the final FSL report can we reach a definitive conclusion,” an official said.

The delay in obtaining comprehensive forensic findings, coupled with uniform witness statements, has fuelled speculation about the direction of the probe. While investigators insist that all angles — including accidental contamination and deliberate poisoning — are being examined, the absence of clear answers has led to questions over whether the police themselves remain uncertain or are withholding key details pending confirmation.

No arrests have been made so far, and officials reiterated that any action would be based strictly on scientific evidence.

What initially appeared to be a case of food poisoning has now evolved into a complex investigation involving forensic scrutiny and family dynamics. With crucial reports still awaited, the coming days are expected to determine whether the lingering questions surrounding the case can finally be resolved.
