Chandipura virus kills five children in Guj, suspected cases rise to 27

The Chandipura virus spreads in Gujarat, primarily affecting children under 14. The total suspected cases in Gujarat have risen to 27, with the deaths of five children.
Over the last five days, the death toll from Chandipura has reached 15. Of these, 14 are from Gujarat and 1 is from Udaipur, Rajasthan. In response to the rising cases, health agencies have become more active.
According to reports, three patients infected with Chandipura are currently undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad’s Asarwa. Among them, the condition of two is stable, while one is on a ventilator.
Another patient, who was in a stable condition, has been discharged with medical advice.
The children receiving treatment are from the Chandlodia and Ambawadi areas. At the Civil Hospital, a one-year-old child from Mehsana and a seven-year-old from Dehgam have died. Samples from the children under treatment have been sent to Pune for further analysis.
A one-year-old from Varetha village in Kheralu, Mehsana, was taken to Vadnagar Civil Hospital after falling seriously ill.
Due to the need for ICU and ventilator support, the child was referred to Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital, where they unfortunately passed away at 12.05 am on the night of July 16.
A 7-year-old child from Muvada village in Amraji, Dehgam, exhibited symptoms of fever, convulsions, and brain fever. The child was admitted to Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital but succumbed to the illness late on the evening of July 17.
To prevent the spread of the Chandipura virus, the health department of the state has increased screening efforts. A total of 10,181 homes, encompassing 51,724 individuals, have been surveyed. Moreover, 3,741 homes out of 3,567 mud houses have been dusted with malathion powder.

The disease is transmitted by the bite of an infected sand fly and primarily affects children aged nine months to 14 years. The main symptoms are high-grade fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, and seizures. If these symptoms are observed in children, immediate medical consultation is advised.
