Updated: Mar 3rd, 2024

For the first time in the post-independence history of Gujarat, 8,086 notaries were appointed by the central government.

With the approval of the appointment of 8,086 notaries in the state of Gujarat, the work of notaries, including affidavits, contracts, and other documents will be quicker and easier across the state.

In interest of Gujarat

In this regard, Gujarat Bar Council chairman JJ Patel said, “The central government’s decision to appoint 8,086 notaries in the state can be considered historic and in the interest of the state of Gujarat. In the post-independence history, such notaries have never been appointed simultaneously.”

“Of all the lawyer candidates from Gujarat who applied to become notaries, most of them have been selected and their appointments have been given the stamp of approval by the central government,” he added.

He further said, “Earlier notaries were available at the district level but not at the taluka level, due to which the central government has now issued notaries. This is a big decision to make the legal facilities available across the state.”

According to Patel, there are more than 18,000 notaries in the state of Gujarat, of which 1,000 to 1,200 notaries are working in Ahmedabad. Notaries are generally allocated on the basis of population and area. Notaries are appointed by both the State Government and the Central Government.

Bar Council to speed up verification

With the central government appointing so many notaries at once through the decision, now the rush of verification forms and its verification is likely to increase in the Gujarat Bar Council as well.

Regarding this, Finance Committee chairman Anil Kella said that the newly appointed notaries will now have to pay a fixed fee of ₹2,500 for verification and obtain an NOC from the Bar Council.
