Central FSSAI’s crackdown on repackers, manufacturers using recycled tins
Despite the ban on the use of recycled tins/containers for packing edible oil and vegetable ghee in Gujarat, such recycled tins are used by small companies, millers, oil producers, traders and repackers. Central FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) has now taken action against such errant units considering the threat to public health.
The Central FSSAI has issued a notice to 48 manufacturers, repackers across the state including the ones situated in Sanand, Changodar, Gondal, and Rajkot.
A list of about 650 more manufacturers, repackers, and traders in the state has been prepared by the Central FSSAI. In the second phase, action will be taken by issuing notices to the remaining manufacturers and repackers.
According to sources, the notice was issued to the units under the provisions and rules of the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulation of 2018. As per the provisions of Article-3(7) of the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulation of 2018, once a tin or box has been used, it cannot be used for packaging any food item or substance.
