A 50-year-old man, reportedly battling cancer for a prolonged period, died during treatment after attempting self-immolation in public in the Asarwa area of Ahmedabad late on Monday night, police said.

The incident occurred near Asarwa Chakla, where the man allegedly poured an inflammable liquid over himself and set fire using a beedi. Passers-by and residents rushed to the spot on seeing him engulfed in flames and managed to douse the fire by throwing water, before shifting him to the hospital for treatment. However, the man succumbed to his injuries during treatment, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Akashbhai Thakkar (50), who had been living at his uncle’s residence in Asarwa Chakla. Police said his wife had passed away six years ago, and he had been suffering from cancer for a long time.

According to preliminary information, Thakkar, distressed by the prolonged illness and persistent pain, reached the public spot late at night, poured the inflammable substance on his body and set himself ablaze. The sudden incident triggered panic in the area, with several people gathering at the spot.

“The presence of mind shown by residents helped in extinguishing the fire quickly and attempting to save his life,” a police officer said.

On receiving information, a team from Shahibaug Police Station reached the scene and initiated a probe. A video of the incident has since surfaced on social media and is being verified as part of the investigation.

Police said a case of accidental death has been registered, and further inquiry is under way. Preliminary findings suggest that the extreme step was taken due to severe physical suffering and mental distress caused by the illness, officials added.
