Canada’s presence at Gujarat’s Vibrant Investor Summit in 2024 has currently been put on hold amid growing tensions between the two countries.

The state officials are likely to seek the centre’s directions before proceeding with Canada’s presence at the summit.

Guj Govt reluctant to invite Canada

Gujarat government’s industries and mines department has decided to remove Canada as a partner country from the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) to be held in Jan 2024.

The arrival of Canadian diplomats and business representatives is also under review by the state for the Vibrant Summit, which is expected to host around 35 partner countries and more than 10,000 delegates for the three-day-long event.

Senior government officials, close to the development, have expressed the state’s reluctance to invite Canada as a partner country.

The industries and mines department may also refrain from sending the six IAS officers’ delegation to Canada, who were previously assigned to promote the summit at the global level.

The state has sought the centre’s directions over the invitations and involvement of Canadian counterparts in the scheduled summit.

India’s relations with Canada nosedived on Sept 19, when prime minister Justin Trudeau accused New Delhi of involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, and from there on, both countries have been engaged in a diplomatic tussle.

Canada at the Vibrant Summit in the past

Canada, alongside Japan, joined the Vibrant Summit as a partner country in 2011. Since then, it has been a partner country for every succeeding edition of the summit.

Canadian diplomats and business delegates were part of the summit in the years 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019. Canada has also made vivid investments in the state on various fronts.
