Bus knocks down pedestrian near Indira Bridge, man loses leg in hit-and-run in Ahmedabad

A 42-year-old civic sanitation worker suffered grievous injuries, including the loss of his right leg, after being hit by a speeding bus near Noblenagar tri-junction on Monday evening, police said. The bus driver allegedly fled the scene without offering assistance.
According to a complaint filed at the G Traffic Police Station, the incident occurred around 7.30 pm on December 29 when the victim, Jayarambhai Vaghela, was walking near the three-road junction close to Indira Bridge. A bus allegedly approached at high speed and struck him, causing him to fall. The rear wheel reportedly ran over his right leg before the driver drove away.
The complainant, Siddharth Chauhan, the victim’s nephew, said he rushed to the spot after being informed by relatives. An ambulance was called, and the injured man was taken to Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, where doctors confirmed that his right leg had been severed below the knee. He is currently undergoing treatment and has been advised further specialised care, including plastic surgery.
Police said the bus was briefly seen at the scene, and its registration number was noted by witnesses before the driver fled. An FIR has been registered against the unidentified driver for rash and negligent driving and causing grievous hurt, and an investigation has been initiated to trace the vehicle and the driver.
Jayaram Vaghela, a sanitation worker with the Amdavad Municipal Corporation, lived in the Noblenagar area with his extended family, police said. Officers are examining CCTV footage from nearby junctions and collecting witness statements to establish the sequence of events.
Further action will be taken once the driver is identified, police added.
