Unidentified burglars broke into a house in the Ranip area of Ahmedabad on Friday afternoon and decamped with gold and silver ornaments worth approximately ₹5.75 lakh, police said.
According to a complaint lodged at the Ranip Police Station, the theft took place between 11 am and 5.30 pm on March 6 at a residence in Parth Society on Radhaswamy Road.
The complainant, Kusumben Vijaybhai Karelia, a retired schoolteacher who resides at the house with her daughter, stated that both of them had left home earlier in the day. Her daughter, Chandni, had gone to a library to study while Karelia had gone to visit her grandson.
When Karelia returned home at around 5.30 pm, she noticed that the iron gate of the house was open and the lock of the main wooden door had been broken. On entering the house, she found that the rooms had been ransacked.
Police said the intruders had allegedly broken two bars of the iron grill of the house to gain entry, after which they forced open the main door and moved through the living room and kitchen to reach the bedroom. The locks of two safes inside the bedroom were broken using a tool, and valuables stored inside were stolen.
According to the complaint, the stolen items include a gold chain weighing eight tolas worth ₹3.25 lakh, another gold chain weighing one tola valued at ₹1.30 lakh, two pairs of gold earrings worth ₹25,000, diamond earrings, two silver bangles, and several other silver ornaments.
The burglars also allegedly took 15 silver coins weighing 10 grams each, two silver rings, and five pairs of silver anklets, along with other valuables kept inside the safes.
In total, jewellery and silver items worth around ₹5.75 lakh belonging to Karelia and her daughter were reported stolen.
Based on the complaint, the Ranip Police have registered a case against unknown persons under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, pertaining to house-breaking and theft.
