A BRTS bus rammed into the wall of a residential building in the Chandkheda area of Ahmedabad in the early hours of Wednesday after its driver reportedly lost consciousness while driving, triggering panic among residents.

The accident occurred near Prahlad Park Society, when the bus, operating on its scheduled route, suddenly veered off course and crashed into the compound wall of the building.

According to preliminary information, the driver is believed to have fainted at the wheel, causing the vehicle to go out of control. “The bus was moving normally when the driver suddenly lost consciousness. With no control over the steering, the vehicle rammed straight into the structure on the roadside,” a police official said.

The impact caused significant damage to the boundary wall of the residential premises, while locals rushed out after hearing the loud crash. Eyewitnesses said there was chaos in the area for several minutes as residents gathered at the site.

The injured driver was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police teams and officials from the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) reached the spot shortly after being alerted. Traffic in the area was briefly affected before being restored.

Officials said no casualties among passengers or pedestrians had been reported at the time of filing this report. Authorities have launched an inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the incident and whether any mechanical fault contributed to the crash.

Rahul Sharma, Head of Department, BRTS Ahmedabad, said, “The incident is an unfortunate one which occurred within the BRTS depot premises. The driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to park it, following which the bus crashed into a wall. There were allegations from residents that the driver was unconscious; however, our investigation has found no evidence to support this. Due to the impact of the collision, the driver went into shock and was administered primary medical treatment.”

He added, “The contractor employing the driver has been heavily penalised and will bear the cost of damages caused to the residents’ property. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.”
