BJP members revolt upon re-election of Vaghji Choudhary as chairman of Harij market

Updated: Sep 11th, 2024

Vaghji Choudhary has been re-elected as Chairman of the Harij Market Yard for a second term. The election, held at the Harij APMC hall, saw Choudhary win by a narrow margin of one vote, by receiving nine out of seventeen votes.

BJP had officially backed Baba Choudhary for Chairman and Dilipkumar Thakkar for Vice Chairman. However, Vaghji Choudhary, who had recently switched from Congress to BJP, defied the party’s mandate and contested for the election.

Despite contesting against the party mandate, a faction of nine members supported Vaghji Choudhary’s candidacy and voted for him.

Baba Choudhary and other critics have accused the BJP of appointing officials like Vaghji, who had previously undermined and worked against BJP candidates in past elections.

This internal dissent within the BJP is reflected in the election’s results, as nine members openly supported Vaghji Choudhary’s candidate against the official party line.
