BJP begins process to appoint mayors across Gujarat's civic bodies

After a comprehensive victory in the local body elections in Gujarat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has begun the process of appointing mayors, deputy mayors and standing committee chairpersons for municipal corporations across the state.

Party observers are expected to visit metropolitan cities and district headquarters from Thursday to hold consultations with newly elected representatives and local leaders before finalising the appointments.

According to party sources, the exercise is aimed at ensuring that new office-bearers assume charge before May 10.

The BJP has also initiated discussions for appointing standing committee chairpersons and party leaders in municipal corporations and municipalities.

As part of the process, observers will gather feedback from elected councillors as well as senior local leaders and submit reports to the state leadership with the names of potential contenders.

Sources said meetings of the BJP parliamentary board will be held at the chief minister’s residence in Gandhinagar between May 4 and 6, during which city-wise and district-wise discussions will take place.

The final names for the posts of mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee chairman and party leader are expected to be approved during these meetings.

Political activity and lobbying among aspirants have intensified in recent days, with contenders reportedly reaching out to senior party leaders in Gandhinagar and at Kamalam to strengthen their claims for key posts.
