An FIR has been registered at Vadaj police station against the accused, identified as Y. Sudarshan, a resident of Bengaluru, Karnataka, for cheating and criminal breach of trust. Police said the accused fled from the Hyatt Hotel in Usmanpura on July 5, just a day after checking into a premium suite, and remains untraceable.
According to the complaint lodged by Huzefa Zakiruddin, duty manager at Hyatt, Sudarshan checked into Suite Room No. 344 around 2 am on July 4 using his Aadhaar card and a Manipal Hospital employee ID as proof of identity. Posing as a business traveller on an official visit, he allegedly assured hotel staff that the bill would be paid by his office or by his father, who, he claimed, was en route to Ahmedabad.
During his brief stay, the accused is reported to have indulged in lavish services, including food and beverages worth ₹4,557, a Balinese therapy massage costing ₹8,673, and salon services worth ₹350. On the afternoon of July 5, he told the hotel staff he was stepping out to withdraw cash from an ATM and would be back shortly. He never returned.
“When repeated calls to his mobile phone went unanswered, we received a brief WhatsApp message saying he would return soon. That was the last we heard from him,” Zakiruddin stated in the complaint.
Vadaj police officials further revealed that Sudarshan had previously stayed at the ITC Welcome Hotel on Ashram Road on June 23, where he allegedly pulled off a similar scam. The Welcome Hotel staff later confirmed that the dues worth ₹40,000 from that stay had also remained unpaid.
“Two UPI payments made towards massage services on June 24 and 25 — one for ₹7,434 and another for ₹8,673 — also failed to reflect in the hotel’s bank records.”
Police said the total outstanding at Hyatt, including room tariff, amenities, and pending service payments, adds up to ₹82,787. Efforts are underway to verify if the accused has a history of such offences in other cities.
“He appears to have orchestrated the entire stay to cheat the hotel. We are coordinating with police in Bengaluru to trace his whereabouts,” said an officer investigating the case.
Sudarshan has been booked under sections of cheating and breach of trust of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A manhunt has been launched, and hotels in the region have been alerted to remain cautious of similar attempts.
As investigations continue, police are also examining the documents submitted at the time of check-in to determine their authenticity.
