Bed capacity at Ahmedabad’s VS Hospital to be reduced by 200

Sheth Vadilal Sarabhai Hospital (VS Hospital), one of the general hospitals in Ahmedabad, will reduce the number of beds from 503 to 203 in next two years.
In the draft budget of 2026-27 by the hospital superintendent, a budget cut of ₹37 crore was indicated compared to previous year. With a budget of ₹207.1 cr and expected income of ₹1.8 cr, the hospital has decided to cut down its capacity by 200 beds.
Around 700 to 800 patients come to the hospital every day for outpatient treatments from across the state. However, due to lack of proper planning and attention, the hospital’s services have reduced.
Moreover, the cost of repairing six wards of the main building is estimated at ₹25 crore as grant, while the state government will give ₹2 crore.
With reduced capacity, the nursing staff has been asked to provide their services at other general hospitals such as Shardaben Hospital and LG Hospital, however, most of them opted for Urban Health Centres.
This situation has also led to the formation of different staff unions at the hospital, adding to the issues of the once well-run and adequately maintained general hospital for those in need.
