Auto-rickshaw driver stabbed by passenger over fare dispute in Ahmedabad

An auto-rickshaw driver was injured after being attacked with a knife by an unidentified passenger following a dispute over change for the fare in Ahmedabad’s Danilimda area on Tuesday evening.
As per the First Information Report (FIR) registered at Danilimda police station, the incident occurred around 7.30 pm on December 16. Sanjay Kanubhai Shivabhai Ravat (26), a rickshaw driver residing in Narol, stated that he was ferrying passengers from Jamalpur towards Narol when an unknown man boarded his rickshaw near the Meldi Mata temple in Danilimda.
As the rickshaw reached near Lalji Parmar Hall, the passenger asked the driver to stop near an Amul parlour and got down. When Ravat asked for the fare of ₹10, the man allegedly produced a ₹200 note and demanded change. On being told that the driver did not have change, the passenger began arguing and abusing him.
Police said the argument quickly escalated, with the accused allegedly pulling out a knife and attempting to attack the driver. Ravat tried to defend himself by raising his left hand, sustaining an injury to his hand. The assailant then allegedly struck him again, causing a head injury that led to heavy bleeding.
Hearing Ravat’s cries, residents rushed to the spot, following which the attacker damaged the front glass of the rickshaw and fled, police said.
The injured driver was taken to the hospital in an 108 ambulance and admitted for treatment. He later approached the Danilimda police station and filed a complaint.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections about assault with a deadly weapon, criminal intimidation and property damage. Efforts are under way to identify and locate the accused, who remains at large. Further investigation is ongoing, officials said.
