With the Lok Sabha election schedules set to be announced tomorrow (Mar 16), the Election Commission in Gujarat is gearing up to implement the model code of conduct in the state.

To ensure law and order during the elections and to keep a close watch on anti-social elements, 1.32 lakh non-bailable warrants have been issued. In addition, nodal officers have been appointed in the districts.

Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Bharathi has provided all district officials with extensive training on the model code of conduct and its implementation process.

In addition, 460 officers and employees involved in the election process have been transferred as per the transfer and appointment policy prepared by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure that voters are not manipulated and the election process is conducted fairly and impartially.

Prohibitory orders have been issued on the sale of liquor, possession of licensed weapons, issuance of weapon licences, misuse of social media, and carrying of mobile phones in prohibited areas.

In addition, instructions have been given to take steps to maintain law and order, including surveillance of jail inmates and action against election-related offences.

The process of depositing licensed weapons will start with the election schedule announcement.

Bharathi has instructed the District Election Officers (DEO) and district SPs (superintendents of police) to take the necessary steps to maintain law and order during the election process.
