Sexual assault survivor’s family chooses to raise child, withdraws abortion petition in Gujarat HC

The family of a 16-year-old rape survivor opted to raise her child instead of aborting the 24-week pregnancy in Ahmedabad.
Earlier, the Gandhinagar resident and father of a rape survivor approached the Gujarat High Court seeking pregnancy termination.
However, in a dramatic turn, after deliberations with family members and friends, the rape survivor’s father withdrew the application.
The Gujarat High Court had ordered a physical and mental checkup of the rape survivor for the procedure of abortion.
However, on Monday, the government informed the court that the survivor refused a check-up.
The rape survivor's father submitted an affidavit in the court saying, "My daughter wants to give birth to this child, and the family will raise the child".
The father also asked to dispose of the pregnancy termination petition. The Gujarat HC approved his request and gave the permission to terminate the petition.
