Assam woman dies by suicide after domestic dispute over food in Ahmedabad's Ghatlodia

A 24-year-old woman from Assam allegedly died by suicide late on Tuesday night after an argument with her partner over a meal in Ahmedabad’s Ghatlodia area. The deceased, identified as Shivali Kashyap, was pursuing an interior design course and had been living with her partner in a live-in relationship.
According to police officials, Shivali and her partner, identified as Saurabh, had been in a relationship for the past two years and had recently moved in together, sharing a rented apartment in Ghatlodia for the past four months. The couple had reportedly relocated to Ahmedabad a few months ago for academic and professional purposes.
The incident occurred around 1 am, when an argument reportedly broke out between the two over the food that had been prepared, allegedly due to excess salt. Following the heated exchange, Shivali is said to have leapt from the second-floor balcony of their residence. She sustained severe head injuries after colliding with a corner wall on the first-floor balcony and was declared dead on the spot.
"Initially, a case of accidental death was registered. However, during further investigation, it emerged that the deceased had been under psychological stress, and the argument appears to have triggered the tragic incident," said J.S Kandoriya, Inspector of Ghatlodia police station
Saurabh, who raised an alarm following the incident, was questioned by the police. According to neighbours and residents, the couple had frequent arguments in the past, often revolving around domestic matters, including food. Saurabh, however, reportedly told police that he had never anticipated that a quarrel would lead to such a drastic step.
Police sources added that the couple’s relationship had not received approval from their respective families, and they had been living independently since moving to the city.
The post-mortem report confirmed multiple head injuries consistent with a fall. Police officials have ruled out foul play for now, but have not closed the investigation. Further inquiries are underway to ascertain if there was any history of mental health concerns or other contributing factors in Shivali’s death.
Authorities are also making efforts to contact the families of the deceased and provide them with necessary support.
