Godman Asaram, currently serving a life sentence in the 2013 Surat rape case, has approached the Gujarat High Court seeking an extension of his interim bail, which is due to expire on June 30.

The plea was heard by a division bench comprising Justices Elisha Vora and P M Raval. The bench has issued a notice to the state government and the complainant, and scheduled the next hearing for June 27.

Earlier in January this year, the Supreme Court had granted interim bail to Asaram till March 31. Following the expiry of that period, Asaram moved the high court for an extension. The matter was initially heard by two judges who delivered conflicting opinions, prompting the opinion of a third judge, who eventually granted a further extension. That extension will end on June 30.

In the latest application, Asaram’s legal counsel argued that the 83-year-old is suffering from multiple health issues and is currently undergoing Panchakarma treatment, which needs to be completed. The counsel also informed the court that Asaram is awaiting a certificate from the National Legal Services Authority confirming his status as a seriously ill and elderly prisoner. The certificate is expected within the next two days.

Taking note of the submission, the high court has issued notices and fixed June 27 as the date for the next hearing.
