Gujarat has only 30 women Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, with no single one holding a key position in the police department.

The state has a total of 194 IPS officers, of which around 15% (30) are women IPS officers.

Most of these women officers are posted in departments like SRPF (State Reserve Police Force), Police Recruitment, Jail Superintendent, Special Branch, CID Crime, IB (Intelligence Bureau), Western Railway, Police Academy, Metro Security Commandant, Traffic DCP, Police Headquarters, and the Police Control Room.

These postings suggest a lack of women IPS officers in key positions.

Several women IPS officers in Gujarat have performed exceptionally well, often surpassing their male counterparts.

Usha Rada played a crucial role in catching terrorists during her tenure in the Ahmedabad Women's Crime Branch. However, she has now been transferred to a side posting as Superintendent of Vadodara Jail.

Bharti Patel, who was the DCP of the Economic Offenses Cell in Ahmedabad, significantly busted financial crimes. However, she too has now been sidelined.

Vidhi Chaudhary, in Surat, was involved in solving a rape case by disguising herself as an ordinary woman. She gained the trust of the survivor and extracted the names of the culprits, leading to their arrest.

In the history of Gujarat, only one woman IPS officer, Geetha Johri, has ever held the post of Director General of Police (DGP).

Johri was first appointed as the Commissioner of Rajkot Police, where she made a significant impact by entering crime-infested areas and making criminals flee. Later, she was promoted to DGP of Gujarat, where she continued to crack down on crime.

Her success has not followed, as no other woman IPS officer has ever been appointed as a Commissioner in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara, or Surat, nor have they been given any other key positions in the police department.
