A 24-year-old architect was reportedly injured after she attempted to chase down an unidentified person who snatched her bag containing valuables worth over ₹1 lakh late at night on June 12 in the Naranpura area of Ahmedabad. The accused is said to have fled on an Activa scooter following the theft, and an FIR has now been registered after a delay of several days.
According to the complaint lodged by Bhavya Porwal, a resident of Vadaj, she had left home around 9 am on June 11 on her two-wheeler to attend a Garba class at Navrang Shaili Garba Academy in Sola. She carried a bag that included her Apple iPhone 11, an HP laptop, and ₹20,000 in cash, the total amount approximately ₹1.05 lakh
After running errands across the city, Bhavya visited her friend near Shivranjani and later went to Vastrapur Lake. Around 3.45 am on June 12, while returning home, she was passing in front of the Bank of Maharashtra situated between Patanjali Char Rasta and Kids World Crossroads, when an unidentified person on an Activa bearing registration number approached her from behind.
The assailant, wearing a black T-shirt, allegedly snatched the bag kept on the footrest of her Activa and sped off in the direction of Mirambika School. Bhavya tried to pursue him and managed to read the number plate. However, during the chase, the accused applied sudden brakes, causing her to collide with the vehicle and fall, sustaining injuries.
Bhavya, who lives with her parents and younger sister, initially did not file a complaint as her family was away on a village trip and she was reportedly shaken by the incident. However, on June 15, she submitted an online complaint and later visited the Naranpura police station in person, accompanied by relatives and friends.
Based on her complaint, on July 7, the Naranpura police registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to identify the unknown accused using the vehicle registration details and CCTV footage from the area.
