Updated: Aug 4th, 2024

After infamous Kiran Patel and Rupesh Doshi, yet another fake official has been booked for extorting money from people in exchange for clearing files in Ahmedabad.

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch lodged a complaint against one Bharat Chhabda for allegedly impersonating a central agency officer, deceiving businessmen with promises of securing government contracts and approvals.

Initial investigations revealed that he committed similar frauds amounting to lakhs of rupees in Ahmedabad and other cities. In 2017, a young businessman from Sardar Nagar met Chhabda, who claimed to be a central agency officer living in Gurugram, Haryana.

He told the businessman that he had contacts in all government departments and could help secure contracts. He took ₹50,000 from the businessman, promising to secure a contract and help him settle in business. When the work was not done and the businessman demanded his money back, Chhabda threatened to frame him in a false case.

In another incident, Chhabda befriended a businessman from Sardar Nagar, Ahmedabad, claiming to be a high-ranking officer in a central agency.

He assured the businessman of facilitating government transfers, contracts, and file approvals. He then took money for car repairs and promised to get the businessman’s father released from jail, extorting ₹1.5 lakh in the process.

Chhabda also used the businessman’s car and dined at his expense in hotels. As he failed to get the businessman’s father out of jail, he was asked to return the funds. Again, he threatened the businessman to frame him in a false case.

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch registered two separate complaints and started an investigation, revealing that Chhabda had defrauded several people in Ahmedabad and other cities by promising government contracts and other services. The investigation is expected to uncover significant details in the coming days.
