With the Lok Sabha elections nearing, a season of turncoats began in Gujarat politics.

As the wave of resignations in Congress continues, after Chirag Patel’s resignation in Dec 2023, a senior Gujarat Congress member of the legislative assembly (MLA), Chatursinh Javanji Chavda, has stepped down from his legislative position.

This morning, CJ Chavda reached the residence of Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary and submitted his resignation.

As per sources, Chavda is believed to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

With Chavda’s resignation, the number of seats in Congress has decreased to 15 in the state.

In the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections, Chavda was elected from the Vijapur Assembly constituency as a Congress candidate, defeating his nearest rival and BJP candidate Ramanbhai Patel.

In the Assembly elections of 2017, he was elected from Gandhinagar (north) and contested the 2019 general election from Gandhinagar, where he was defeated.

Chavda was the president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) and also served the party as head of the Gandhinagar district congress committee.

Notably, on Dec 19, Chirag Patel, a Congress MLA had resigned from Khambhat seat.
