AMTS driver held for assault on woman after posing under a false identity in Odhav

An AMTS bus driver has been arrested by Odhav police for allegedly deceiving a widow by assuming a false identity, promising marriage, and sexually assaulting her over an extended period, police said on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Mohsin Pathan, a native of Godhra, had allegedly introduced himself to the woman as ‘Mohit Patel’ to gain her trust. According to investigators, the woman, who worked at a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Navrangpura, first came into contact with the accused during her commute.

Police said the two gradually became acquainted and later remained in touch through social media platforms. During this period, the accused allegedly concealed his real identity and marital status, claiming to be unmarried. Officials added that Pathan is married and a father of three children.

According to the complaint, the accused lured the woman into a relationship on the pretext of marriage and allegedly took her to various hotels, where he repeatedly raped her. To sustain the deception, Pathan is said to have prepared a fake Aadhaar card under the alias ‘Mohit Patel’ and used it as identification at hotels.

The alleged fraud came to light after the woman checked the accused’s mobile phone, which revealed his true identity and personal details. She subsequently approached the police and lodged a complaint.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (I Division) Krunal Desai said that the accused has been arrested and a case registered under relevant sections of the BNS, including charges of rape, cheating, and forgery. “The accused had created a false identity to trap the victim and exploit her under the pretext of marriage. Further investigation is under way,” Desai said.

Police are also probing how the fake Aadhaar card was procured and whether others were involved in facilitating the forged identity. Officials added that the accused had been working as an AMTS driver for the past three years and had been in contact with the complainant during this period.
