Amreli police expose cyber fraud worth ₹2.74 crore, main accused arrested

A major cyber fraud racket operating in the name of stock market investments has been exposed by the police in Gujarat’s Amreli district. The investigation began after a cyber fraud complaint was registered around 20 days ago. Based on technical evidence and surveillance, police arrested the main accused, Meherji Mafaji Thakor, from Patan.
During the investigation, police discovered that the accused was involved in much larger financial frauds than initially suspected. What started as a probe into a fraud case involving ₹96,000 eventually led investigators to uncover transactions worth ₹2.74 crore. According to police officials, the money had been collected from multiple victims through cyber fraud over a period of just two months.
Further investigation revealed that eight cyber fraud complaints had already been registered against the accused in different parts of Gujarat. Police said that while individual victims often report relatively small losses, a deeper examination of the accused’s bank accounts can reveal large-scale fraud affecting many people.
Officials have advised people to immediately report cyber fraud by calling the national helpline number 1930. If a complaint is made quickly, authorities can freeze the money before it is withdrawn from the bank account, improving the chances of getting it back.
Police and cyber experts said that such cases should be registered as FIRs and not be limited to freezing bank accounts. This helps police take stronger action against cyber crime gangs and seek stricter punishment.
The accused has been arrested and further investigation is underway.
