AMC’s beautification of Chandola Lake lies buried in murky water

In July 2015, ownership of the Chandola Lake was transferred to the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC), so it could be developed in a manner similar to the Kankaria Lakefront. In 2025, AMC is yet to begin beautification of the lake.

In 2015, it was announced that Chandola Lake will be re-developed in two phases, at an estimated cost of ₹27 crore. The AMC announced the beautification of the lake along with a walkway, a gym, and a community hall that could fit 500 people.

However, these promises have not seen the light of the day.

The lake is in swamp-like conditions with water tainted with algae, giving it a murky, polluted appearance. The lack of cleanliness further exacerbates the situation, making the water unhealthy.

Additionally, the stagnant waters serve as an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, contributing to malaria and dengue cases in the area.

The AMC had also approved ₹89 lakh for clearing algae, waste, weeds, and grass from the lake.

During a Gujarat Vidhan Sabha session, it was discussed that the area is grappling with encroachments. Without the clearance of these illegal settlements, the beautification of the lake is likely to be further delayed.
