AMC’s 24-hour eviction notices to 102 Kalupur Bridge shops leave traders in pre-Diwali distress

The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has issued a 24-hour eviction notice to 102 shop owners on Kalupur Bridge, citing the unsafe condition of the structures. The notice, signed by the Deputy Estate Officer of the Central Zone, was served on October 10.
According to AMC officials, the shops—built more than 75 years ago—are structurally unsound. Some portions of the complex reportedly collapsed on October 8, prompting the civic body to order immediate evacuation to prevent further accidents.
Shops built for Partition-displaced migrants
The shops were originally allotted to migrants displaced during the India–Pakistan Partition to help them rebuild their livelihoods. Traders say they have been paying rent and other dues regularly for decades.
“We have been running our businesses here for generations,” said one shopkeeper. “The notice came suddenly, without any time to prepare or relocate.”
Traders call move ‘unfair’ before festive season
The eviction order has caused distress among the business community, coming just days before Diwali—a key period for sales. Several traders argue that an abrupt closure would lead to major financial losses.
Many have urged the corporation to postpone the demolition or provide alternate space. “This is the peak time for us,” said another trader. “If we shut down now, it will ruin our festive season and our income.”
AMC yet to announce relocation or compensation
While officials maintain that the decision prioritises public safety, affected shopkeepers say they have received no assurance on relocation or compensation. The AMC has not issued any statement detailing plans for rehabilitation or assistance.
Traders continue to appeal for government intervention, hoping that the civic body will offer a solution that ensures both safety and livelihood protection.
